PSHE & RSE subject specific curriculum statement

Back to subject specific statements

At Marden Primary Academy, our intent is to:

  • Develop learning that results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills that enable children to access the wider curriculum, work collaboratively with others and make positive contributions to the life of the school and wider community.
  • Prepare children to be a global citizen in a diverse society and prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
  • Ensure that teaching and learning provides the building blocks from the 3 areas of the Early Years PSED self regulation, managing self and building relationships and progression across the Key Stages using the core themes: health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world.
  • Ensure all teaching equips pupils with age-appropriate, sound understanding of risk, with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions and to recognise the importance of their own mental health and wellbeing.
  • Incorporate an age-appropriate understanding of RSE that enables all children to be safe and to understand and develop healthy relationships both now and in their future lives.
  • Provide our children with learning opportunities across and beyond the curriculum. An hour long standalone lesson is delivered every other week but lessons are also delivered when needs arise in individual classes. Lesson objectives are also mapped to be integrated into our PYP lines of inquiry.
  • PSHE is an important part of our school assemblies where children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured.
  • By teaching pupils to stay safe and healthy, and by building self-esteem, resilience and empathy, an effective PSHE programme can tackle barriers to learning, raise aspirations and improve the life chances of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged pupils.
  • Skills and attributes developed through PSHE are shown to increase academic attainment and attendance rates.
  • By the time children leave Marden Primary Academy the PSHE curriculum enables them to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It helps them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.
  • Our curriculum allows pupils to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be part of a diverse society, as well as how they can play a positive role contributing to school life and the wider community.
